Karen Stobbe switched her career from theatre and improvisation to healthcare when her dad, Manfred, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Since then, she has served as the Director of Education for Pioneer Network, written over 12 training programs and spoken all across North America. Karen was also the co-creator of the Hand in Hand Training program for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which was distributed to every nursing home in the U.S. 

Mondy Carter worked as a commercial and stage actor for 30 years and now he animates videos, having produced over 200 videos for training. He has also directed and served as lead videographer & editor on projects and worked as a voice actor and live actor. Karen and Mondy were featured in Real Simple magazine, NPR’s This American, Life and performed a National TEDMED Talk. 

Just one year after Karen’s dad passed away, her mom, Virginia, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Virginia lived with Karen & Mondy for 11 years. Karen & Mondy have been married for 26 years and live in Black Mountain, North Carolina with their five furry friends.

Tony Luciani

Tony Luciani graduated from Toronto's Ontario College of Art in 1977 with prestigious honours and continued his post-graduate studies in Florence, Italy. After more than 45 years as a full-time painter, Luciani garnered worldwide attention with his five-year-long photography series to document his aging mom's struggle with dementia. Their voyage of discovery, expressing the benefits of inclusion and participation within a creative medium, has gone beyond the boundaries of recognizing it as just a personal visual diary. 

This imaginative expression of his mom’s experiences propelled his work internationally. Luciani's art can be found in private, public, and corporate collections globally.

Kyla is an associate at Wolseley Law LLP where she works in the areas of Wills, estates and Corporate/Commercial law. She is the co-instructor of the Wills and Succession course at the University of Manitoba Law School and is a regular public presenter on Wills and estates for a variety of community groups.

Kelly Tye-Vallis

Kelly has over 20 years of experience in the long-term care sector, specializing in the diagnosis and management of communication and swallowing disorders in the geriatric population. Kelly earned a BA degree from the University of Manitoba, a BA degree from the University of North Dakota and a graduate degree in speech-language pathology from the University of North Dakota. Kelly is a current member of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists Manitoba.

Sarah-Jane Beaudry

Sarah-Jane Beaudry is a Clinical Nurse Specialist with the WRHA Palliative Care Program. Her motivation to enter nursing stemmed from her lived experience caring for a loved one at the end of life. Through this lens, Sarah-Jane provides dedicated care for patients and their families. 

Originally from the East Coast, Sarah-Jane now lives, works and enjoys the sunshine in Manitoba on Treaty 1 Territory and the homeland of the Metis Nation with her husband and their three children.

Jennifer McDougall

Jennifer McDougall is a clinical nurse specialist with the WRHA Palliative Care Program. She has over 15 years of combined experience in long-term care, hospice care and community palliative care. Jennifer also has personal experience with dementia and palliative care.

For the past 12 years, Vicki Russenholt has worked as an education facilitator with Victoria Lifeline, a province-wide Medical Alert Service. She is a passionate advocate for older adults and brings years of experience as both a family caregiver to parents with dementia and a former homecare business owner to help people lead safe and independent lives. She also volunteered for many years as a support group facilitator with the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and 10 years as a Board Member of a Winnipeg Personal Care Home. 

As a certified fall risk assessment and prevention educator, Vicki provides free community presentations and resources on Lifeline services, fall prevention, healthy living and so much more!

Rebecca Atkinson

Rebecca Atkinson has been a practicing physiotherapist since 2006. She’s held many roles involving seniors and those with neurological and brain changes. She’s worked in a variety of settings including acute hospital units, rehabilitation clinics, community programming, long-term care and palliative care. She now works with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba as the South Central Regional Coordinator, walking alongside families as they navigate dementia. 

Her passion is ensuring people have a voice in their care and that they can make informed choices about their life’s purpose and meaning. For herself, she uses nature, music and movement together with meaningful relationships to nurture her quality of life.

Bev Airey has been dedicated to the healthcare field since 2008, consistently focusing on the older adult population. In her current role as Regional Senior Support Supervisor for Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority (IERHA), she oversees 29 services to senior-funded agencies and 14 adult day programs. She also acts as a system navigator for older adult support. 

Bev is profoundly grateful to work in a profession where she can make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors every day. It is a privilege to contribute to their well-being and enhance the quality of care and support they receive.

Sue Hemphill

Sue Hemphill is a 30-year mediator, facilitator, trainer, coach and programs developer. She currently focuses on workplace mediation but has worked with families throughout her career. Sue will reflect on her lived experience with close family members living with dementia to share useful theories and concepts related to communicating with family when there are diverse perspectives. 

Sue is a training Associate with Mediation Services and has also been running her own consulting company for 15 years (Healthy Hive for organizational and community development).

Dr. Lindsay Torbiak

Dr. Lindsay Torbiak is a Geriatric Medicine specialist (Geriatrician) working in Winnipeg. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba and is the Program Director for the Geriatric Medicine subspecialty program at the U of M, which trains future geriatricians. Her clinical practice includes seeing patients and care partners living in the community with dementia and frailty.
